R21- JULY 07 2007 v Parramatta : A 2-1 victory to Manly against the 2nd side in the comp. The Parramatta boys seemed down, flat and did not look or play like a top two team, at no time in the game did we seem under pressure and if not for the 'failure to communicate' it would have been 2-0.

R10 - MAY 29 2007 v Sydney Olympic : Tuesday evening, cold, windy and dark at the Hensley Athletic Stadium, for an 8pm kick-off against Sydney Olympic for the round ten catch-up game. Although flood-lit, it would be fair to say that the stadium lighting was poor, with emphasis more on the running track than the field.

With Larry Bates (Coach) in Canberra this week, the team was in the safe hands of the Assistant Coach Chris Watson with help from Peter Green. As to the players, Ozzie and Patrick still out with injuries and Leigh feeling ‘under the weather’, meant just two subs on the Manly bench. The referee blew his whistle and the game was underway, Olympic kicked-off, passed the ball wide to their right which was intercepted by Grant who made a spirited run attacking Olympic down the left with the situation being diffused by the Olympic defense, tackling hard with the ensuing tussle ending with a free kick awarded to Olympic. The free-kick did not get Olympic out of trouble, as the ball never left their half... Manly won back the ball and a visionary pass from Max out to Grant on the left saw the ball whipping into the centre, out of reach of the keeper, across the goal and to the far post but unfortunately no one was available to finish.

The Olympic Coach was obviously troubled by the opening minutes and gave his right back instructions in very clear terms to stick to Grant and this he did for the rest of the game. With only five minutes of the game played, Luke was substituted as he was really not feeling well… and now we were down to twelve. Even in these early minutes, it looked as though the Manly boys were more than capable of winning this game, putting the Olympic defense under pressure through a series corners and shots on goal… a header from Thomas, a shot from Max, a strike from Tony and then another from James… a flurry of activity that should have yielded greater dividends.

Olympic started to find their rhythm and with end to end play, both sides had the opportunity to score with both being denied due to excellent performances from the two keepers, Sam for the Manly team and the Olympic keeper who must easily be the ‘biggest’ U14 in the competition. Whilst we had more of the game the Olympic attacks seemed more measured, more structured and more threatening through exploitation of the space afforded them through our strategy of not tightly marking the players out wide combined with the greater Olympic precision in passing the ball, especially in the mid-field space. As the half-time whistle was blown, still no score 0-0.

The second half went much the same way as the first, with chances on both sides, both keepers continued to play with confidence and whilst we had shots on goal they were too far out with insufficient power or direction to challenge the very capable Olympic keeper.

Although Manly had more chances on goal, the Olympic boys came closer to making an impact on the score line… first hitting the cross-bar and a shot from inside the box that required an exceptional save from Sam, to maintain a clean sheet.

At full time still no score, so again we have to share the points and another game that got away from us.

R6 - MAY 20 2007 v Dulwich Hill : A 4-1 win over Dulwich Hill, may sound impressive BUT theirs is not the best defence we have faced. The Manly forwards were allowed far too much room and presented with the opportunity to 'play' freely... none the less another good win and another very valuable 3 points.
