2009 0829 - PreLim Final SYL U16 - Tigers (0) v Macarthur Rams (1) : Still can't believe we lost this game, this was the year we were supposed to do better and what made it worse is that we did not lose to a better team... but why? We probably began our warm up too late, maybe it was too rushed and we were not mentally prepared? There is no doubt that we missed Gian's creativity up front, we did not exploit the left forward quadrant of the field, our passing in mid-field was lacking in accuracy and some of the on-field player combinations had the crowd questioning our interchange strategy. We hit the woodwork, we had our chances but again this week we could not finish. For the Macarthur late second half goal goal, we were guilty of watching... we just watched the ball go into the back of the net? In fairness to the Macarthur boys, they were pumped, determined and really wanted the win, they knew they had to fight for it and maybe were guilty of a little 'rough' / harsh tackling with Lachie, Glenn and Grant on the receiving end. Yes there were some of the Tigers boys who as usual gave their all but this is a team sport and today we manged to save our worst performance of the year for the most important game of the season. This was not the way the day was supposed to end... parents and boys dispersed some without a word of goodbye... maybe it was shock, maybe it was embarressment but suddenly everyone was gone... maybe next year is our year?

2009 0823 - SF 2v3 SYL U16 - Parramatta (6) v Tigers (5) - Penalties : A blistering hot day at Valentine Park for the first round of semi-finals - Parramatta (2nd) versus Tigers (3rd). Full time 0-0, extra time 0-0. Overall, Tigers were the better team and had plenty of opportunities to win the game in normal play, but a combination of 'unable to finish' AND some excellent Parramatta goal-keeping (Sam) meant the decision came down to a penalty shoot-out. Nathan's shot was saved, Glenn saved one for us (kept us even) but Matt (7th) missed his kick, with a strike that sailed over the bar. Tigers lost 5-6 on penalties. We obviously have to do better next week... BACKS - run faster, MIDFIELD - snappier more positive passing, FORWARDS - find the angle and finish!

2009 0815 - R22 SYL U16 - Tigers (0) v Gladesville 'Spirit' (0) : Game 22, the last match of the rounds and exactly as it was last year, this local derby between Tigers and Spirit has both sides playing for more than just pride. For the Tigers (depending on other results) there was the possibility of finishing one, two or three and for Spirit (also depending on other results) the chance to make it into the top five and continue their season. With Tigers players, both away and injured this week, Joe (Coach) and Russ (Asst Coach) were looking for everyone to ‘step up’ for what was essentially the first week of finals football.

From the kick-off it was clear that Spirit were again playing Max up front in an attacking role rather than his normal role of mid-field distribution but Tigers had his measure with Grant shadowing Max’s every move. In the opening minutes there were real opportunities for Tigers to go ahead from both Matt and Nathan, both of which attracted some words of ‘encouragement’ from the Tigers Coach. Spirit also had their chances, Max was ‘gifted’ the ball from the Tigers defence and laid it off to Jason in front of goal, but with Grant tackling and blocking the right footed shot, Jason then swivelled and tried with his left, but put the ball out for a goal kick. Jason’s second attempt at goal had him 1:1 with Glenn (GK) with his strike already being celebrated as Luke swept in and at full stretch, cleared the ball off the line… awesome! With fifteen minutes left to play Dave (Tigers) plus a spirit defender and the Spirit keeper all went for the loose ball and judging from the scream of pain, the keeper came off the worse. Play stopped while the keeper’s wrist was attended to with some of that ‘magic’ water. Both sides had their chances but no goals in the first half. Joe’s (Coach) half time assessment was to the point, “we’re not showing enough hunger… their beating us to every ball… we expect more”

Tigers kicked off for the second half and straight away Spirit attacked, but Glenn (GK) has safe hands. Fifteen minutes in and there was an incident… two Spirit players crunched Gian (pushing / shoving / studs up) with the end result being that Gian was the one who was punished for his 'soft' retaliation - a red card and Tigers down to ten. The following fifteen minutes saw the Spirit boys lift their game whilst we tried to settle into the situation… they were all over us. Once our composure returned, it was the Tigers boys who looked most likely to break the deadlock although Dave (Spirit) had a real chance from a free-kick and in front of goal, just failing to connect with his head. At the other end Dave (Spirit) kept his team in the game with his off the line clearance. For the last ten minutes Max switched to the left and was joined up front by Terry on the right… but these changes had little impact on the play. Matt’s shot just wide of the right hand post had him with his head in his hands… so close. So, no goals today and with the rest of the days results tabulated, Tigers finish 3rd in the rankings but unfortunately Spirit were unable to secure a place in the top five.

Looking back on our season, the two games that hurt us most in our quest for the top spot were, our first game of the season loss to Dulwich Hill and our ‘home / away’ draw against Southern Branch. Looking forward to the finals series the big questions are, will Lachlan be back from his injury to help bolster mid-field, who is going to partner with Matt up front and against the top five teams, is three at the back going to be enough?

2009 0815 - R21 SYL U16 - Tigers (3) v Blacktown Spartans (3) : With the final series looming, every game and every point counts. For the first fifteen minutes the Tigers boys were on fire, with Gian and Matt combining up front in some wonderful attacking and unselfish play but they were denied their names on the score card. The momentum of the game shifted as the Spartan boys, rather than just watching, got involved. The Spartans boys attacked down our left and Grant defended against the cross twice before the ball was whipped into our goal-mouth where we afforded the Spartans forward, way too much space and at point-blank range, Glenn had no chance… 1-0 Spartans. In response and only seconds from the restart, Lachlan played the ball to Nick, whose strike on goal hit the cross-bar, rebounding to the feet of Matt who drilled the ball low and to the right of the keeper to put us back on level terms… 1-1.

Spartans took the lead again with an unfortunate handball by Luke in the box and a well struck penalty sent Glenn the wrong way… 2-1 Spartans. A probing run by Alex down our right ended with a cross to the left which somehow managed to find the back of the net and two a piece. Unfortunately Gian incurred an injury and was unable to finish the half. At half-time, Joe’s (Coach) advice was “It was a good half, we can’t let these boys back into it… we can definitely beat them” whilst Russ (Asst Coach) just asked for more “We need to be hungrier, we need to want the ball… we need more intensity”. Ten minutes into the second half, Casper came on at Centre Back and within seconds whilst turning away from the ball to shield himself from the blow was judged to have handled the ball and another penalty was awarded. There were few in the ground, other than the chorus of Blacktown Spartans supporters, who saw what the referee saw… but that’s football. Spartans took their opportunity and the lead… 3-2 Spartans. At this point the game took a turn for the worse with obvious time-wasting being the Spartans chosen manner in which to secure the game (kicking out, setting / re-setting ball, milking each ‘injury’, walking very, very, very slowly, interchange etc). It was a shame to see the Spartan boys resorting to such behaviour rather than just playing football. Their behaviour was not punished by the referee and would have been successful if not for the Tigers determination to push for another goal. As the game was tight and with the team result very much at heart, Romaan gave up his opportunity to come back on, meaning that our momentum and balance of play was maintained… true team spirit. Romaan’s choice was rewarded when Matt smacked the ball from outside the eighteen yard box to restore parity… 3-3.

With little time remaining, we were awarded another corner, much to the annoyance of the Spartans supporters who gave the referee ‘heaps’ for playing into what they considered to be the 37th minute of a 35 minute half. With the corner taken and the ball cleared, the whistle was blown for full time.

This game will be remembered for some disappointing refereeing decisions, a swag of goals, the blatant time-wasting, the support from the side-lines and the never give up attitude displayed by the ‘Come Back Kids’.

2009 0802 - R18 SYL U16 - Schofield Scorpions (0) v Tigers (5) : What a difference a day makes and with two players away and one out injured, so there was a need to mix things up at the back, no we didn’t play four but, we did have Luke at Centre Back at Ross to his right against a Scorpions side coming off their first win of the season from the previous day. The buzz was that the Scorpions had at last found some form, Tigers beware. The CSI ground was not the best prepared with one of the corner areas resembling a sand-pit more than a football pitch. The Scorpions were counting on their new-found star striker Adin (a hat-trick the day before and an ex-Tiger) to repeat his performance from the day before but they had not factored in the Tigers impressive defence.

The first half turned out to be a demolition with two goals from Matt and the third, an oh so sweet left footed shot to squeeze the ball into the bottom left hand corner to finish then half 3-0 Tigers. At half-time Joe’s (Coach) message “you’re playing very well, now just go out and play the same simple football”

The Scorpions Coach was no less animated in the second half than he was in the first, although some of his remarks / requests of his boys to “take out” our boys were borderline. Two of our boys bore the brunt of the Scorpions play, Grant was head-butted (yellow awarded) and Gian was stomped on… twice (red awarded). The second half goals came first from Matt for his hat-trick and an awesome leap from Nick to finish with his head… 5-0 Tigers. Two games this weekend and the full six points to move us into second position on the table just a couple of points behind the Panthers.

2009 0801 - R20 SYL U16 - Sydney Wanderers (0) v Tigers (2) : During the first 10-15 minutes it looked as though this was going to be a tough game indeed especially as we presented the ball back to the Wanderers way too many times and yes there were a couple of sitters that we should have put away. Fortunately Gian was on hand to put us in front, a lead that we took into the sheds at half time… 1-0 Tigers. The message from Joe (Coach) was to the point – “We’re not playing very well and we need to put in another goal to finish off these guys”. Gian had obviously been paying attention and obliged with a second... 2-0 Tigers.

We gave away a ‘silly’ foul on the edge of the box and our setup organisation was still in progress when the free kick was taken… luckily Glen was awake and pulled off a terrific save. Other than for the first fifteen minutes the game never looked in doubt BUT we played the game in a luck-lustre manner without our normal zip / passion. Post match discussion identified that the constant changing of the ball did not help plus the ground was considered by the boys to be slow and ‘bobbly’. As if to compensate for the performance on the field (yes we did win 2-0) the victory song was sung loud, very loud and with obvious delight.

2009 0726 - R19 SYL U16 - Western Panthers (0) v Tigers (4) : ‘Claws’ were out today for this round 19 clash between the Panthers and Tigers. With the Bathurst Western Panthers boys sitting at the top of the table most for most of the season, this match was always going to be a hard fought game made even more difficult with the change of day, venue and the weather. The chosen venue being the Marjorie Jackson reserve in Lithgow, a bumpy, short and narrow pitch and set up that does not play to our strengths. An intense warm-up was required from both teams to beat off the cold temperatures and constant ‘drizzle’ of rain. With only Romaan unavailable to play, Joe (Coach) took the opportunity to add Zac (U15’s GK) to the card.

Our first goal came through a corner kick taken by Luke on our left who dropped the ball into the six yard box with Nathan meeting it on his head to power it down towards the goal and finally helped across the line by Alex who managed to connect and put us ahead… 1-0 Tigers. For the rest of the half it felt as though we were defending and the Panthers were attacking but, the Tigers back line defended well (maybe a few too many punts rather than playing the ball out), allowing us to take the lead into the sheds at half time. The squad managed to squeeze themselves into the changing room (not very much room at all) and take on the half time message from Joe (Coach) “The team is performing well… we need to keep the ball on the ground, keep it simple and we will beat these guys”.

The second half was underway and for the first five+ minutes, the Bathurst boys were on top and looking to get even, however this effort soon evaporated. Lachie hit a long lofted ball over the Panthers defence with Matt as the target. The lone Panthers defender was about to clear the ball when the keeper ran out with the obvious miscommunication resulting in their collision and the ball popping out for Matt to calmly slot it into the back of the net… 2-0 Tigers. From this point on, other than a couple of long range shots from a frustrated Jake in the Panthers midfield, we never really looked troubled.

The Panthers defender tackled, won the ball and laid a soft back-pass that was intercepted by Gian who turned his player inside and stroked a fantastic curling shot into the top corner… 3-0 Tigers.

Darcy played a great left to right switch ball to Ali, who continued his run down the right into the corner, fending off the Panthers defender and played the ball into the middle of the six yard box straight onto the head of Matt who made no mistake with a text book finish, heading the ball down and into the corner of the Panthers goal… 4-0 Tigers.

This was indeed an unexpected VICTORY, we had anticipated a hard fought game but in the end, the Panther boys, with their back four playing so high, allowed us the space to run at goal and punish them. Today, everyone arrived on time, everyone was fresh, we made fewer early changes to the line up, the mid-field won & distributed the ball forward with confidence and we finished up front... all of which contributed to the boys delivering an impressive team performance - well done!

2009 0711 - R17 SYL U16 - Tigers (1) v Southern Branch (1) : On arrival at Ison Park Nowra, all the pre-game conversation was centred around the ‘late’ change of venue fiasco from the day before. KDSA called the ground unusable at 13.00hrs and discussed direct with FNSW to jointly agree to give up our home ground advantage and have us travel down to Nowra (three hours+ away) for this round seventeen clash… WHY? Everyone’s weekend arrangements had been turned upside down and all because of an incorrect call on the suitability of the Mills Park playing surface. All way too early in the day and to add insult to injury, others later confirmed that Mills was fine and there really was no need to change venue at all… a case of ONE TOO MANY COOKS.

Southern scored in first ten minutes due a defensive error on our part. A cross from their left to the right landed at the feet of the Southern forward who turned, swiveled around Ross and with a right footed shot caught an unsuspecting Glen and 1-0 Southern. A late in the half interchange brought on Alex to further improve our chances down the right flank. At half time and one nil down, Joe’s (Coach) message was to the point “You’re still in the match by the skin of your teeth but you need to play simple football”

In the second half the Southern boys seemed content to just kick the ball out of play as hard as is possible in an attempt to slow down the game, frustrate the Tigers play and maintain their one goal lead… ‘two out of three ain’t bad’ but in this case it was not good enough. Ten minutes in and Matt, some way outside the eighteen yard box, struck a left footed screamer into the top corner… 1-1 and back in the game. We continued to dominate, probably holding more than 85% of the possession but we could not finish, no matter how hard we tried. The Southern boys continued with their determination to see which of them could kick the ball furthest out of the park and the tactic worked, the game ended in a 1-1 and the points shared. This was a game that we should have won - given better planning / playing at home and earlier use of our stronger players, we probably would have.

2009 0704 - R16 SYL U16 - Granville Rage (0) v Tigers (3) : With the pre-match confusion in the Rage camp about which of the boys was actually going to play, common sense prevailed and the ‘card’ was completed. Given the recent history surrounding the Rage U16’s, there was a degree of uncertainty about the level of intervention, both on the field and in the stands, going to be required to get through this game without incident. In the end, it was a non-event and the game was contested in a tough but fair manner. The referee did well to control the game but did need to talk to the Rage Coaching staff and ask them to curb their enthusiasm and direction (to both teams and the referree) from the sidelines.

This was not the same Rage team that we played earlier in the season, there was not the same fire or intensity (aggression) in their game, in fact they looked a little subdued. It may have been that like the Tigers boys, they too were suffering a number of illnesses in the squad. Due to illness / coming back from illness, the Tigers starting line up was a little different than in previous weeks, so it took the boys a few minutes to settle down into the game and shake out the ‘gremlins’ and massive air swings.

Nick played a perfect through ball but Matt was called offside. Matt had another chance but this time, over the bar. Gian did all the hard work in creating the opportunity and having got the Rage keeper off balance and out of the way, cut the ball left and across the face of the goal but just too wide. Ali to Alex to Gian with a shot that was destined for the back of the net but was instead cleared off the line by the Rage defender. Another turn of pace from Gian before crossing the ball into the centre to find Matt with a shot on target but straight into the arms of the Rage keeper.

The half finished 0-0 with Glen (GK) only touching the ball once, we never looked under any real pressure and should have been two or three in front. At the break the message from Joe (Coach) was “keep the pressure on, we’re not playing too badly, but we’ve got to step it up… we need to put these guys away… if we score one we’ll score three”. Resuming the game, Luke came on to further bolster our back line. With Joe’s prediction of “three” still hanging in the air, the second half got under way:

1st GOAL – Darcy got the ball at the half way line out on the right and played a 35m cross field pass into the Rage box. Nick rose into the air to win the ball and head it down into the path of Gian, whose right foot volley beat the Granville keeper to make it 1-0 Tigers

2nd GOAL – Alex on the right, again running at and beating the Rage defense passed to Gian who teamed up with Matt and no mistake… 2-0 Tigers

3rd GOAL – Gian ran in from right and hit the ball into the roof of the net… 3-0 Tigers

Romaan found himself in unfamiliar territory having to go 1:1 with the keeper, who did well to save the Rage from going further behind. With illness comes injury and fatigue so today, the Captains armband was proudly worn by three of the boys with Nick wearing it for the last fifteen minutes of the half. Full time and in the Tigers camp, smiles and joviality whilst for the Rage, heads down and long faces, which was made worse by having to listen to the Tigers victory song… again, just as they did in round 5.

2009 0630 - R10 SYL U16 - Blacktown Spartans (0) v Tigers (1) : It was a cool Tuesday evening drive out to a dimly lit Francis Park stadium to play this round ten catch up game against the Blacktown Spartans. Unusually, we were at full strength with no space on the card for any of the U15’s. Although we were playing some good football it took twenty minutes before the deadlock was broken. A pass into the box from our right and Lachlan with his back to the goal, swivelled on his right foot, turned and smacked the ball into the net with his left… as good as it gets and 1-0 Tigers. For the rest of the half we continued to dominate not allowing the Spartan boys any look in at all.

At half time the message from Joe (Coach) was simple “more of the same please”. In reality the break was our undoing and within seconds of the kick-off it was obvious that the Blacktown boys had both changed tactics and stepped up a gear to prompt an urgent “lets wake up” from the Tigers dugout. Blacktown pushed an extra man forward and by playing wider, really stretched our back line. This would have been a good night to have had four across the back or at least some more responsive assistance from midfield. A Blacktown ball in from the right, across the face of the goal found a connection and thanks only to the right hand post were we still ahead. A Blacktown header needed an outstanding athletic save from Glen for us to keep our lead.

We had our chances as well… a run at goal from Matt (right of centre) and a cut left into a box of multiple white shirts without any cotact being made, saw this real opportunity fade. Spartans continued to use the width of the field… another run down the left and a pass across the face of the goal which managed to elude players from both sides. A high ball challenge headed away by Grant rewarded him with a fat lip and a mouthful of blood courtesy of a Spartans elbow. No sooner had the ball been cleared it was back again and an uncharacteristic clumsy (late) challenge from Grant earned him a yellow and Blacktown a free kick from just outside the eighteen yard box. The Blacktown boys took their time for the set up but nothing, they wasted their chance. It was obvious that we were hurting at the back as evidenced by the number of corners that we conceded. Thanks to some quick thinking and a turn of pace from Adam, another Spartans attack down our right was averted. From the confident and dominant play of the first half, in the last ten minutes of the second, we were really struggling / battling to maintain our one goal advantage. Spartans had another real chance to pull back level when the ball was presented to the tall forward just outside the six yard box but somehow he managed to sky it over the bar. In the final minutes, a magnificent Blacktown strike at goal was already being celebrated as Glen (GK) pulled out a ‘white rabbit’ finger tip save that was just extraordinary!

At the final whistle the relief on the Tigers faces was in stark contrast to the obvious disappointment of the Spartans and although it was a great first half goal from Lachlan, without doubt, the only reason that we came away with the win and the three points, from what was truly a game of two halves, was due to the outstanding goalkeeping skills of Glen.

2009 0627 - R15 SYL U16 - Parramatta PCYC (3) v Tigers (1) : This is probably a game to forget rather than remember although it was good to see both Lachlan and Glen back from recent injury. The teams matched up on the field, with the PCYC boys looking sharper, keener and more determined but unlike us, they were not intent on blindly kicking balls forward with a 50/50 (or worse) chance of a positive outcome.

From a PCYC corner kick on our right, the ball swung in skimming backwards off Nick’s head, hit the cross-bar, bounced down and although Ali was on hand to clear the ball it had unfortunately already crossed the line… PCYC go ahead 1-0. Within minutes we conceded another corner but this time it was headed clear and picked up by Nick who ran past the half way line before feeding the ball through to Matt, whose angled left footed shot was assisted into the goal with a deflection off the right-hand post to level the score at one each.

Pushing up on the right we lost the ball… PCYC wasted no time in playing a long ball across the width of our area resulting in Dave tussling / grappling with the PCYC forward for possession, but an unfavourable bounce landed at the feet of a PCYC player who drilled his shot into the back of the net… 2-1 PCYC.

Joe’s (Coach) half time messages were “pass to the feet boys” combined with “we can get back in the game…. OK gentlemen let’s lift”.

The second half saw no real improvement in our play but there was a performance or two provided by the PCYC forward with his diving certainly worthy of an Oscar as well as a red card for his unnecessary and brutal late tackle on Lachlan (only received a yellow). PCYC attacking down their left, crossed into the box looking for their right winger who took too way long to line up his telegraphed side-footed shot, allowing Grant enough time to sprint in and block the ball from going over the line.

Matt took a solo run through the centre (left of goal) pushing his way through to reach the PCYC bye line, but with too tight an angle to shoot, cut the ball to his right and into a space devoid of any white shirts. Being 2-1 down and not playing very well, we were pushing at the PCYC goal with both our midfield and defence playing high, for which we paid the price. Having lost the ball, the PCYC counter-attack on their right had their forward running at speed but being pushed wide by Grant who just could not stop the cross into the centre for the waiting three red shirts, no white shirts and an easy conversion… 3-1 PCYC. Thank goodness the referee blew his whistle for full-time. This was a shocking performance with no ‘silver linings’ to provide any offset. We were unable to pressure PCYC on either flank, which focussed the game down the centre of the park and for some reason we were guilty of watching rather than doing, far too often. The PCYC boys were fired-up for this game, we were not. Their extra determination was rewarded with a well deserved victory and consolidation of their position at the top of the table.

2009 0620 - R14 SYL U16 - Tigers (3) v Macarthur Rams (0) : In our previous round three encounter (no Nick, no Glen and a very different back three line-up) we lost four goals to three… today we had to do better! An overcast, rainy day on top of the weeks rain resulted in a wet muddy pitch, with pre-match pitch inspections 50/50 to proceed or not? With the nod given to continue with the fixture the game got underway and right from the start we looked the better side. Bo was the Rams spearhead in attack last time and today was no different BUT this time he was marked out of the game and the threat was removed! Alex came on after ten minutes and from his first touch increased the tempo of the game with multiple probing runs down the right and thanks only to the efforts Rams keeper, they were lucky to not be down by two goals.

Grant took the ball from defense and set off down the left to beat four players taking it to the Rams bye line left of goal and although there was the chance of a shot, the cut back into the centre was the better option. Unfortunately with all the mud, Gian could not convert in front of the open goal and the ball went wide. The weather had its part to play and it was amusing to see the second best tackle of the day by a puddle, robbing Matt of the ball, allowing the Rams boys to mount a counter attack, but as for last week, our back three were in fine form. Late in the half, Gian made a break, beating the last man (playing very high) who took the only option available to him, dragging Gian to the ground by his shirt tails and lucky to get away with just a yellow. The Rams had their chances but thanks to Zac (GK) who got ‘down and dirty’, the half finished 0-0.

In the sheds at half time Joe (Coach) was pleased with the performance so far, stating that the “the goal will come, so keep doing what you’re doing”. The second half resumed with Luke being brought on at right-back. We looked most dangerous down our right with the midfield teaming up with Alex to press the Rams defense . In the midfield our boys were not letting the Rams get away with very much at all. A cross in from the right, through the Rams eighteen yard box and past the keeper, presented Ali the perfect opportunity just outside the six yard box, but in the wet muddy conditions, somehow he managed to sky the ball over the bar. Another linking move from our midfield out to the right, saw the cross into the eighteen yard box and away to be cleared, however the referee blew for hand ball and a penalty was awarded to Tigers without protest. Darcy stepped up and without hesitation stuck the ball into the back of the net… 1-0 Tigers with Darcy’s obvious celebrations (removing his shirt) attracting a yellow, thanks mostly to the insistence of the Rams boys.

In another dead ball situation, Ali’s jostling of the Rams keeper was just once too often, on top of the previous warnings and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a yellow card. The corner kick in from Luke fell luckily to be put away by a jubilant Dave… 2-0 Tigers. A change of tactic for out next corner (on our left)… a short pass to Darcy and the ball was whipped into the centre to connect with the head of Dave who powered the ball into the net, a truly great goal and 3-zip Tigers. Rams were down but not out and a break away by Bo had Grant tracking back to execute a perfect sliding tackle to the obvious delight of the watching crowd. Being up 3-0 a number of interchanges gave Millsy (U15’s) the opportunity to get stuck in and deliver a solid last ten minute performance.

The weather did nothing to dampen our spirits and the boys delivered a real team performance with another three points on the board, a truly enthusiastic rendition of the victory song (both verses) and playing kit so muddy / black, it’s going to take weeks of soaking to get clean… maybe next week we will have to wear green?

2009 0613 - R13 SYL U16 - Central Coast Lightning (1) v Tigers (1) : Due to the recent rain, the Pluim Park ground was squelching at the sides, resulting in lots of sliding / slipping by both teams.

The Tigers back three (Luke, Casper & Grant) had to work overtime today to contain the Lightning forwards who are some of the fastest in the competition. The ‘boys at the back’ worked as a unit with confidence and intelligence, which would have been enough to keep a clean sheet if not for the silly and unnecessary foul given away late in the first half of play. From the dead ball kick, Daniel (Lightning striker) sent the ball looping and to the left of Zac (GK) who even at full stretch was just not able to get a touch. A well struck ball and 1-0 Lightning. Lightning continued to push and we continued to defend although Dave’s shot on goal was not that far from its target... just a little too high. This was not the best half of football the boys have ever played in the middle of the park... we can do better.

The second half continued as the first had ended, with Lightning pressing forward and still being allowed far too much space in the middle. Both teams had their chances at goal, with Tigers being thwarted by Lightning crowding their defence and Lightning being denied with two cracking saves from Zac to keep us in the hunt. With fifteen minutes to go, Lightning seemed more than happy to defend their 1-0 lead and did not venture much beyond their halfway line, allowing Tigers the opportunity to build some momentum and the game tuned distinctly in our favour... if only we had played like this in the first half!

With only a couple of minutes remaining, Tigers won a corner. The ball was crossed into the crowded goal-mouth and with the Lightning keeper at the near post, the ball went over his head, falling to Nathan who made no mistake with his left footed strike into the back of the net and bring us back on ‘level pegging’. Not long after, the whistle blew for full-time on a game that could so easily have gotten away from us. From the body language, it was clear that the Lightning boys felt that they had let this one get away from them, which is probably true but a share of the points does our cause no harm at all… it could so easily have been no points at all.

2009 0606 - R12 SYL U16 - Tigers (2) v Dulwich (0) : Forty seconds in and the Tigers mounted an attack on the Dulwich goal but Matt was unlucky not to finish. Next Nathan with a sitter, but instead passed the ball across to Matt whose side footed volley hit the crossbar and although the ball came down the right side of the line (even confirmed by a number of opposition spectators) neither the Referee or linesman agreed and the chorus of claims for a goal were ignored, however the ball bounced kindly for Matt who had a second chance at goal. This time with a bicycle kick which went too high. Alex not to be left out, had a couple of chances but on both occasions hit the ball straight into the arm of the Dulwich keeper. Dulwich responded, but the Tigers back line of three swept up nicely. Earlier in the season there were rumours that we would be adopting a more standard ‘back four’, but not yet. It’s fair to say that we had plenty more chances at goal and on a different day maybe more would have been converted.

For some strange reason our boys must have forgotten that ‘Clarky’ is no longer playing for the Tigers as they passed / presented the ball to him more than once. ‘Clarky’ was having a go today and went in full bore (elbow high), bowling over Grant in the process. From the sideline it was difficult to judge whether the target had been the ball or Grant? Grant was a little shaken but got to his feet with a smile. Gian took a cross arriving in from the left and with a right, side footed shot, put the ball past the keeper… 1-0 Tigers. Half time in the sheds and Joe (Coach) stated that “The game is not over and we cannot allow these guys back into the match”. The second half saw Luke take the field at right back to make his Tigers debut. Luke’s first kick was tentative but found its mark and after a couple of minutes of play, settled down into the game but was soon sprinting hard to try and catch the Dulwich forward who certainly had some pace.

A great ball from Gian to Matt, but unfortunately the shot was wide of the target. Dulwich were pushing hard for goal, prompting Glen to come off his line and jump high to collect the ball but in the process, he clashed with the Dulwich forward, and landed hard, taking a few minutes to recover from the shock and jarring of his leg. Continuing to press hard, Dulwich were rewarded with a free kick on the edge of the Tigers box but the threat soon passed as the kick, covered all the way by Glenn, was just too high. Tigers continued to play the ball around, stringing together some good passing sequences. Nick had a shot and the Tigers boys continued to push forward with Gian’s attempt, although on target, played straight to the Dulwich keeper. Romaan was next to shoot and another over the bar… maybe today was the day to play a different code of football. Unfortunately one of the Dulwich boys (left defensive position) involved in a hard tackle, had to be stretchered off. The Dulwich boys continued to attack and a real opportunity was thwarted by Romaan. On the counter attack, the play included Darcy – Gian – Nick to Ali, who seized his chance with a well placed strike to make it 2-0 Tigers. Romaan pushed down the left to win the corner. Waiting for corner kick to be delivered, Ali was hassling the keeper and in doing so, attracted a stern talking to from the referee, but no yellow. With only two minutes to go Romaan laid the ball through to Darcy who fell foul of the off-side trap. Dulwich continued to attack and were unlucky to hit the woodwork (crossbar). Our next attack started with a great through ball from Luke to Darcy. In the middle of the park Adam was ‘taken out’ and awarded a free-kick which turned out to be the last play of the game.

Overall a good team performance, another three points on the table (now sitting in 4th position and still top of the ‘goals for’ & ‘goal difference’ columns) and another rousing rendition of the victory song.

2009 0530 - R11 SYL U16 - GHFA Spirit (0) v Tigers (3) : This eagerly anticipated local derby round eleven clash between Tigers and Spirit at Christie Park saw both teams pumped and looking for points. From the off it was clear that Spirit had changed their team format from their tried and trusted recent winning combination and in moving Max to a more forward role, gave up their otherwise expected command of midfield.

An early clash saw Nick come off the worse but with adrenalin levels running high, he managed to work through the pain and deliver another solid performance. Tigers first goal was from Matt – a cross from Gian into the centre with Matt getting the vital touch to roll the ball past the Spirit keeper. Tigers second goal came as a result of a Spirit defensive error – the centre back got the ball inside the eighteen yard box and instead of clearing the ball, tried to run it out, he was tackled by Gian who struck at the bottom left hand corner, but instead hit the upright with the deflection making it 2-0 Tigers. In the sheds at half-time the message was load and clear “we have to keep up this intensity, the game is far from over”.

The Tigers first half dominance continued into the second and a shot on goal, going high and moving across to the right prompted a needless reaction from one of the Spirit backs, to reach out and handle the ball. A penalty was awarded but it was not a case of ‘being as simple as 1,2,3’. Dave stepped up and hit the ball high and to the left, however the keeper moved off his line and a re-take was awarded. Encouraged by a pep-talk from the Tigers Captain, Dave again stepped up but this time, hit the left hand post, ricocheting the ball across the face of the goal to the right and safe, but this time the spirit boys were deemed to have been too keen to enter the box and a third chance of conversion was awarded. Dave relinquished his responsibility to Darcy, who stepped up to the mark with confidence. The keeper dived to his left and Darcy’s shot was placed squarely into the centre of the goal… 3-0 Tigers. The Tigers boys remained dominant for the rest of the half and it was unfortunate that Ross was not able to convert any of the opportunities presented, meaning that the Spirit boys were let off lightly with only a three nil defeat, it could have been much worse.

Overall, the best Tigers U16 Team (Together Everyone Achieves More) performance of the season so far! This win moves us up into 5th spot on the table, only a single point behind Spirit and only four points adrift of the 1st placed Western Panthers.

2009 0516 - R09 SYL U16 - Tigers (5) v Sydney Wanderers (1) : There was barely enough time for the crowd to tune in – from the kick off to Casper – Grant – Dave with a pass through two defenders to find Matt and within less than fifteen seconds 1-0 Tigers… what a start. A Wanderers shot on goal was easily scooped up by Glen with his kick bouncing over the heads of the Wanderers defence to fall at Matt’s feet, a turn and a run at goal should have delivered a better finish. A miscommunication between the Wanderers defender and keeper resulted in a loose ball to provide Nathan the chance to convert in front of an open goal – no mistake and 2-0 Tigers.

A run down the right and into the eighteen yard box by Matt which, due to the extremely tight angle should have prompted a simple cut-back for his waiting support, rather than the shot into the side netting. With balls being played forward from our midfield, Matt and Gian continued to pressure the Wanderers defence, which was not helped by their Coach’s continual substitutions. Another through ball from Gian to Matt and an attack on goal ended with the Wanderers defender colliding with his own keeper who came off the worst. Always better to be safe than sorry, the keeper, complaining of neck pain meant an ambulance had to be called and the first half concluded a few minutes ahead of time.

Unbelievably the second half started in much the same manner as the first, kick-off back to Casper – Darcy – Alex who’s run ended with a pass into Gian who had no trouble in beating the keeper, 3-0 Tigers. A free-kick to Tigers and Joe (Coach) took the opportunity to make a substitution and somewhere in the middle of this, the kick was taken and the ball played through to Alex who placed his shot into the bottom right hand corner, giving the Wanderers stand-in keeper no chance, 4-0 Tigers. Minutes later and on the edge of the box, Matt played the ball to his left and Grant was on hand to make it 5-0 Tigers.

The last 10 minutes of the half saw Tigers make a number of substitutions with some of the boys playing out of their normal positions and this combination allowed Wanderers back into the game… they pushed hard. Casper worked hard and continued to sweep up... putting his body on the line more than once. Wanderers continued to pressure and were finally rewarded with a consolation goal, 5-1 Tigers. No doubt at all that the last ten minutes of the game belonged to the Wanderers.

This was not the Wanderers side that we played in the pre-season trial and our early goals certainly helped our cause. The three points move us into 7th position on the table (15 points), with only four points between us an the top placed PCYC team (19 points), there really is not much in it. After nine rounds, we have the best ‘Goals For’ in the comp (23), the best ‘Goal Difference’ (13) and on current form, we should be placed higher.

2009 0509 - R08 SYL U16 - Tigers (0) v Western Panthers (0) : This round eight game against the Western Panthers boys was always going to be a closely fought contest which was evidenced with our starting back row line-up of Alex, Casper & Grant, shades of 2008 and an instant injection of confidence for both the team and the crowd. During the first ten minutes, the Panthers forwards were pushing on all fronts and without our bolstered defence plus the safe hands of Glen, we could have easily been down a couple of goals. With the first tentative minutes out of the way we settled down with our first real opportunity falling to Gian… but not today.

The play was at both ends of the field although it was the Tigers goal that looked most vulnerable, especially for the set plays. Glen’s clearance from the edge of the box bounced over the heads of the Panthers defence falling favourably for Matt but was denied his goal due to the efforts of the in form Panthers keeper. The referee judged a determined yet fair tackle from Nick as warranting a ‘talking-to’ but having walked away forced the ref to follow and in turn issue a yellow. There were opportunities missed by both teams but in fairness, it was the Tigers boys who were doing most of the defending but we did come close when a ball crossed in from Dave found the head of Gian who under pressure, directed it wide of the target.

The half finished 0-0, with general agreement that some of the boys were working overtime whilst others were not working hard enough and that we were still in contention thanks to our back three and Glen.

In the second half it was more of the same, although the Panthers turned up the heat on the strength of their tackles earning themselves a couple more yellows, one for an outrageous late tackle on Grant… even though the ball had already been played forward. The suggestions being offered to the Referee from the Tigers Coaching Staff could be heard on the other side of the park. Our best chance of the half came from Matt, when right of the goal, he had the time to pick his spot, sending the ball over the keepers head and onto it’s target of top left corner however the Panthers keeper at full stretch managed to pull off a huge Hollywood save to preserve the 0-0 score-line and a share of the points.

2009 0502 - R07 SYL U16 - Tigers (4) v Schofields Scorpions (0) : Could the boys make it three in a row… that was the question? Lachlan played a precisely weighted ball in behind the defence to Gian who took the ball to the left of the keeper with supreme confidence and slotted the ball calmly into the goal… 1-0 Tigers. In spite of the early lead, Joe (Coach) was animated on the touchline and some early substitutions allowed the boys to settle into the game. The first half ended with just the single goal. Half time discussions in the shed focussed on not slacking-off and to keep applying pressure… it was essential to not allow Schoies back into the game.

The boys took to the field for the second half. A great one two between Nathan and Gian completely confused the defence, presenting Gian with all the space in the world to calmly (just like he had in the first half) to take the ball to the opposite side (left) of the keeper and slot the ball away, 2-0 Tigers.

Not to be left out, Romaan was next to get on the scoresheet due to the disarray of the Schofields defence. From the corner kick, a great low driven ball in from Lachlan allowed Romaan to sprint into the box, reach the ball first and fire a header past the keeper who had no clue whatsoever that he had just conceded another goal… 3-0 Tigers. The most notable miss of the game, was from Nick who should have put it away, no excuses and accompanied with a comment overheard from a close relative stating that “he could have walked it in from there”

Schoies frustrations and talking back to the referee resulted in the Scorpions number four getting a red for abusive language. Schoies were down to ten men and their heads followed. Ten minutes to go and Matt (returning from a recent injury) takes the field replacing Gian up front and in the right place right time side slid the ball past the Schoies keeper… 4-0 Tigers. It was a good victory, another three points on the board and the victory song was sung with ‘gusto’.

2009 0425 - R06 SYL U16 - Southern Branch (0) v Tigers (3) : The boys seemed in good spirits as they arrived at the ground with some, who took the scenic route from Sydney, arriving later than others but eventually the squad assembled including Glen coming back from his recent injuries.
From the start, the boys knocked the ball around with confidence and it was Gian who got his name on the score sheet first to put us into the lead. Our second came after the ball was crossed into the box and Grant rose into the air to first head the ball past the keeper and then follow through clashing heads with Ali, 2-0 Tigers. The boys were on form today, with everyone doing their job and all working together as single and supportive unit. Grant went for a run down the left past one, two, pushing past three and four before cutting the ball back into Ross who unfortunately was not able to control the ball and the possibility of a third was lost. Both teams had more chances at goal but none were able to be converted.
At the break, Joe (Coach) was obviously pleased with the performance stating “now that’s what the boys are capable of”. The second half resumed… Nick’s free-kick overshot the height of the goal by some considerable margin but this was not our only chance, Alex had a go and Nathan missed a sitter. Thanks to Glen (GK) the Southern boys were denied the chance to equalize… welcome back Glen. The cross-bar deprived Alex of a goal and although Dave connected well with Lachlan’s corner kick, the ball went straight into the waiting arms of the keeper. Lachlan’s next corner landed in the middle of the packed goal mouth and bounced off Tigers body parts as if in a pin-ball machine, finally falling to Gian who made no mistake, 3-0 Tigers.
The Southern boys were down but not out, a break-away run looked to offer them a chance to claw back but Glen pulled off another courageous save, to maintain his clean sheet. In the last fifteen minutes of play the U15’s boys were given the chance to join in and maintain the pressure. Ali swept though the Southern defense but his on target shot was saved by the diving keepers trailing legs. Before leaving the park, the boys posed for a team photo and the smiley faces say it all.
Overall, a confident ANZAC day performance and a three zip score-line to put another three points on the board. The day was topped off with a much more enthusiastic rendition of the victory song… well done to the boys and more of the same next week please.

2009 0418 - R05 SYL U16 - Tigers (5) v Granville Rage (1) : This round five match against Granville ‘Rage’, kicked-off with the expectation that it was not going to be incident free. From the whistle, the Rage boys lived up to their name and reputation, getting stuck in, with Gi falling foul to an almost targeted series of tackles that finally saw him limping (assisted by Sam) from the park after only ten minutes, with the added disappointment of seeing the Granville boys high 5’ing each other in celebration. The yellow card awarded to the Rage No.3 offered little compensation for the brutal studs high tackle. With our three at the back formation, we looked vulnerable to attack which was not helped by how easily we gave away possession – too many times. Up front, whilst we had shots at goal, they were too far out and did little to trouble the Rage keeper. When we did get the opportunity to run with the ball, the Rage replied by hacking, shoving and generally railroading the Tigers boys off the ball, resulting in a half time score of 0-0, with a swag of yellow’s awarded to the Rage.

There were obviously some words (aggression, spirit, intensity, determination, railroaded) exchanged in the sheds at half time, which were obviously still being contemplated when the Rage went ahead 1-0 from an unexpected but well taken mid-range strike. To their credit, the Tigers boys did not drop their heads but it was THE INCIDENT that provided the spark to ignite them into action. Michael came in hard (half-way line in front of the ‘stand’) which resulted in both boys tumbling, arms flailing, raised hands, retaliation and the makings of an all out brawl as others started to join in, including the Rage keeper who was still sprinting from his line as the Tigers Captain stepped in to help defuse the situation, allowing the Referee to regain control of the game (he should have blown his whistle much sooner and louder). In consultation with his linesmen the referee awarded a yellow to Michael (Tigers), which to the on-looking crowd seemed a harsh outcome, considering the events of the game so far. The game resumed with emotions running high on both sides. A great through ball from midfield to Michael, saw him take on the Rage defence and shoot at goal, there was a deflection, the ball was spinning, it continued to spin, the Rage defenders were unable to control the ball and the ball was still spinning as it crossed the line, 1-1.

Next Lachlan took the pass in from Alex onto his left foot and volleyed the ball from outside the eighteen yard box to make it 2-1 Tigers. With what turned out to be an inspired substitution, Ross made his debut for the Tigers and being in the right place at the right time, took the cross in from the left onto his head and turned the ball giving the keeper no chance to respond, 3-1 Tigers. An outrageous tackle (studs high) on Ali by the Rage No.3, saw him awarded with his second yellow, with the automatic red sending him from the field. With the Rage now down to ten men the impact on the team was noticeable and marked the beginning of their collapse. Another probing run from Grant down the left, culminated with a cross that deflected off a Granville player to hit the cross-bar, the ball bounced kindly for Alex who laid it off for Ross who had no trouble in placing the ball high and to the left of the keeper, 4-1 Tigers. A few minutes later, Ross was unlucky to not get his hat-trick. Not being content with four, Nick on the right and more forward than usual, let loose a curling left footed shot, squeezing the ball past the fully stretched Rage keeper, to find its target - top left hand corner, a cracking goal and 5-1 Tigers.

Final score, too many yellows to count, one red to the Rage, two limping Tigers, a 5-1 victory (first of the season) and smiley faces all round BUT still plenty for us to work on, including the boys rendition of their Victory Song.

2009 0404 - R04 SYL U16 - Tigers (1) v PCYC Parramatta (1) : This weekend the U16’s drew 1-1 with PCYC Parramatta. Overall a much better performance than last week, with the backs controlling the movement of the ball with much more confidence than in recent weeks. PCYC took the early lead, a Tigers miss-kick in midfield provided the PCYC forward the opportunity to push the ball wide of the ‘last man’ who turned and chased shoulder to shoulder but with only the option of a foul from behind inside the box (and a certain red), inevitably the ball found the back of the net, 1-0 Parra.
The Tigers equaliser came through a penalty in the dying seconds of the game. Alex stepped up, shot at goal but sent the ball soaring high above the cross-bar, but fortunately, the PCYC boys moved too soon and the referee ruled a re-take. This time no mistake 1-1. From the Parra KO, the ball was passed out to the left and the whistle blown for full time… lucky or what, one point each.
The U16’s are still looking for that elusive first win of the season, maybe round five is going to provide those smiley faces?
